The Art of Science Fiction
Spring 2015
Science fiction is a genre that can be loved (or at least appreciated) by all age levels, so students in grades K-6 all got to participate in a science fiction themed unit in art class. Some learned about concept artist Ryan Lang (Big Hero 6) and made masks/superhero suits inspired by his art. Grades K and 1 made aliens and spaceships inspired by the book, Aliens Love Underpants. Others made Star Wars/Ralph McQuarrie inspired pieces, including intergalactic battles in space, imaginary planets, aliens trapped in carbonite, ceramic monsters that glow, and unique alien character designs. Older students learned about how Industrial Light and Magic brings digital designs to life, and made aliens, ships, and green-screen art using some of their basic ideas. 2nd grade even made their own Baby Groot sculptures and made stop motion videos so they could dance! PCE's librarian, Mrs. Martin, even recruited her son to make some extra-large Star Wars origami to decorate the entrance to the library, and graciously let our alien art invade her space.
